Curriculum and Programs
Our curriculum serves the needs of pre-school aged children ages 2.5 - 6.

Rainbow Group (2.5 by September)
For some children, entering this class, it is their first experience away from home. Others come to us from a family childcare situation. This group needs nurturing and lots of individual attention. We provide laps to sit on while reading stories or singing songs. Children enjoy a house corner with babies to dress and feed. We try to build a strong sense of community within the class by including lots of family pictures and stories. The curriculum typically offers many sensory activities.

Unicorn Group (3 by September)
These children usually have made the transition from home to school. They know the routines and look forward to sharing stories and ideas at circle and learning new skills through activities. In this year, children begin to play cooperatively, valuing the relationship with another child over a toy. They often create scenarios independently and explore roles in their dramatic play.

Star Group (4 by September)
In this group, children plan and direct a lot of the curriculum with the teachers. They often engage in intricate art or building projects, which they can "save" and work on over time. Many children begin an interest in writing during this year and teachers take dictation from children, encouraging them to write their own stories. The creative arts come natural to this age group. They often incorporate music, dance, stories and art in a self produced show.

Astro Group (5 by September)
This group attends morning or afternoon Kindergarten in their neighborhood Needham Public School and spends the rest of the day at Carter. Van service is provided to all children. We offer an enrichment program, determined each year by the interests of the children and teachers in the group. The group often chooses broad topics such as space or Antarctica, that can be explored over a period of time. Board games and sports are always a part of the Kindergarten curriculum. Friendships are important to the 5-6 year old and some make their first real friends in the kindergarten year.
